The girls in Fit Girls are greeted each week by some pretty special women. They are teachers and friends all working to make the girls in our program feel good about themselves. They run with the girls. They play games with the girls ( and they are not afraid to become part of the Octopus in one of the girl's favorite games). As part of our last day of the spring session, our girls played a game where they could share warm and positive thoughts about each other. It is called the "Compliment game". Each girl has a paper taped to their back and during a warm up run, I tell them to stop and they are to turn to the person closest to them and write something nice about that person on the paper. The game goes on until each girl has 10 or 12 compliments written on their paper. At the end of the game, the girls can remove the page and read the wonderful compliments given by their peers. The smiles are broad as they read notes such as: " you are really smart"; " you have a great sense of humor"; "I like your smile"; "you are kind"; "you are really fun"; "you are a really good runner"; and the list goes on. Our volunteers always are part of this mix, cheering, encouraging, believing and supporting these girls throughout the program.
Merriam-Webster defines volunteer as "to give", these remarkable women choose to bring joy and confidence to our young girls all in the name of fun!
I thank them for their generous gift of time:)
